“The Alliance for Equal Representation in Medicine (AFERM) is a coalition of students at the University of Washington School of Medicine dedicated to improving diversity in medical education with the ultimate purpose of providing culturally competent and representative future physicians for all patients and communities. We openly welcome members of any race, color, creed, religion, national origin, citizenship, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, or military status.”

Goals for 2012:
  • Increase diversity in the UWSOM incoming classes (prior to and during the interview process)
  • Promote diversity once students are accepted
  • Have diversity/acculturation depth to all AFERM related activities

AFERM seeks to unify minority student groups as they strive to enhance the medical education at UWSOM through active recruitment of underrepresented applicants and through committed participation in the school’s efforts to develop relevant curriculum and to further diversify the faculty.
